Self determination
Treaty song (Remix)
What do you think the song is about?
I believe that this song is about the treaty that was promised by Bob Hawke in 1988
Treaty Australia
1. How much land do the Aboriginals have in Victoria?
It was said in the interview that they have access to roughly 2% of land for cultural purposes and owning rights, this is land which they “owned” before the English empire had came.
2. Who is Les Malezer?
He is the advocate for the indigenous people, he is of the Gubbi Gubbi people. He is running for co-chair in congress.
3. What are the International obligations of the Australian Government?
I believe that their obligations should be to make up for what they have done in the past by giving titles, land rights etc. to aboriginals. Internationally, the Australian Government has the obligation to meet with the leaders of other countries and discuss policies, to not start wars unethically or if they aren’t required, and to treat other countries with respect.
4. What is the outcome he is after?
What he wants is a treaty between the aboriginals and the Australian government in order to help the aboriginals.
5. What did he say about the Treaty?
"I believe that this is the way ahead because the declaration says that we have the right to self-determination as people which means we can make our own political decisions about the future we have the right to resources, we have the right to continue, to survive as people."
6. Name some of the rights he talks about?
He spoke about the right to have access to government, the right to have access to proper resources, a right to survive fairly.
7. What is the problem with a treaty?
It is difficult as you must convince people that it is the right thing, I’m assuming that even once that is finished it would be difficult to write up all the details regarding the treaty etc.
8. Who are the people that make a difference?
Really the only people that can make a difference are the politicians.
9. What is the culture he mentions?
He mainly refers to the Aboriginal indigenous in Victoria
10. Why was the interview held in the MCG?
They wanted many people to hear and watch the interview.
Self Determination – First Australians
1. Who was Eddie Mabo?
He was a very important person when it comes to Aboriginal land rights. He went to court for 10 years and he showed that claiming Terra Nullius previously was a lie and that change the law regarding Aboriginal land rights.
2. How was the Murray Island land passed on through generations?
The Son every generation would inherit the land.
3. Who owned the land in the eyes of the law?
The Government was seen as the owner of the land according to the law.
4. Mabo V QLD – What was the disagreement?
Mabo argued that his ancestors had owned the land for generations and the government argued that they owned it due to the land being “Terra Nullius” before they arrived.
5. Why did the Aboriginals think they had land rights?
Because they are the original custodians of the land that had owned it for hundreds/thousands of years prior to English settlement
6. Which Prime minister promised a treaty?
It was Bob Hawke in 1988
7. Did he keep his promise?
He did not keep his promise and there still isn’t a treaty in place.
8. How long did it take for the Mabo case to reach the High Court?
It took 10 years in court
9. What did Mabo say on his death bed?
10. What was the White Society’s lie?
They said Australia was Terra Nullius
12. What was the alliance saying about the decision?
Most were very happy about what had happened but few wanted to win more land
13. Why is he considered a hero?
He changed the land rights laws for Aboriginals in Australia, this helped many Indigenous Australians and that is why he is considered a hero.
14. Who was Douglas Bon?
He is the Grandson of Mabo’s Grandfathers brother
15. Do you think the land belonged to the Aboriginals? Why?
I think it does because the aboriginals were here before the English settlers and it wasn’t their land to take and say they owned it and then go around trying to wipe out the aboriginals.
